Heat comes from three directions
The sun on a steel roof, the machines on the floor and the outside temperature all add heat at once. Air conditioning fights the total; high air-change cooling carries it out instead.
The roof is high and the floor is open
A shed roof traps hot air at the top while people work at floor level. You need air delivered down into the working zone, not chilled somewhere near the trusses.
It runs long hours
A production floor cooled by air conditioning runs an enormous electricity bill across a double shift. The running-cost gap that looks small per hour becomes the whole argument over a season.
How we solve it
What Dr. Duct puts in
- High air changes. We size for 22 to 30 CMH per sq.ft depending on the process heat, so the hot air is replaced many times an hour rather than recirculated.
- Air pushed to the floor. Roof or high wall-mounted Air-X units with bottom or side discharge put the cooled air where the people and the machines are.
- Fresh air, exhausted heat. 100% outside air on every pass, with a designed exhaust path — open ridge vents, louvres or relief openings — so the heat actually leaves the building.
- Plant that a local electrician can service. Simple, robust machines with consumable pads and pumps we keep in stock, not a sealed refrigeration circuit that needs a specialist.

Will air cooling really work on a hot production floor?
Yes, and it is one of the jobs it does best — because the problem on a factory floor is heat being added continuously by machines and the roof, not just a high outside temperature. Moving 20 to 30 air changes an hour of cooled fresh air through the space carries that heat straight out. What it will not do is hold a sealed room at a set temperature like an air conditioner; that is not the goal on an open floor.
How many units does a typical factory shed need?
It depends on the floor area, the roof height and how much machine heat there is. As a guide, a production floor is designed at around 22 CMH per sq.ft, rising to 30 where there is heavy process heat such as welding or a furnace. A 10,000 sq.ft bay at 22 comes to about 2,20,000 CMH — roughly five AirX 50K units. The calculator gives a starting figure and the free survey confirms it against your actual layout.
Can you cool just one section — a welding bay or a packing line?
Yes. Spot or zone cooling is common where the whole shed does not need it. We place units to throw cooled air across the specific area, which uses far less power than trying to cool the entire volume. On a partitioned or clean packing area we would duct the air in from an outside Blow-X unit so the plant stays out of the working zone.
Does the shed need to stay open? We keep the shutters shut for security.
Evaporative cooling needs air to leave as fast as it comes in, so it needs an outlet — but that does not have to mean open shutters. Ridge vents, roof extractors, high-level louvres or relief ducts all work and keep the building secure. Designing that exhaust path is part of the survey; without it the cooling will underperform no matter how good the units are.
What does it cost to run compared with the air conditioning we priced?
A fraction. On the catalogue basis, the air cooling equivalent of an 8 ton air conditioning load draws about 1.1 kW against roughly 9 kW — and that gap runs every hour of every shift.
