When you need it
Three reasons a space goes ducted
Ducting is not for every job. An open factory floor or a warehouse aisle is usually better served by wall or roof-mounted units. Ducted cooling earns its cost in three situations.
The plant cannot be in the room
A decorated banquet hall, a clean packing area, a partitioned office — anywhere the machine, its water and its noise must live somewhere else and only cooled air comes in.
The air has to reach a specific place
Long halls, deep floors and multi-bay sheds where simply blowing from a wall leaves the far end warm. Ducting carries the air to where the people and the heat actually are.
The space is enclosed or partitioned
Cabins, meeting rooms and enclosed production areas that an open-floor axial cooler cannot reach. Ducting delivers measured air to each zone through ceiling diffusers.
How a ducted system works
Four parts, one job: cool air where you want it
- Blower unit, mounted outside. A Blow-X blower sits on the roof, a plinth or in the service yard — never in the room. It has the static pressure to push air through ducting, which an axial fan does not.
- Insulated supply ducting. Sized so the air arrives cool and quiet. Duct velocity is kept low on purpose: undersized ducting is the usual reason a ducted system whistles or underperforms.
- Ceiling or wall diffusers. Cooled air is spread evenly across the space through diffusers positioned at the survey — over the seating, the workbenches or the aisles, not dumped in one corner.
- A designed exhaust path. Evaporative cooling needs the old air to leave as fast as fresh air arrives. Ridge vents, louvres or relief openings are part of the design, not an afterthought.

Questions about ducted cooling
What is ducted air cooling, and how is it different from a normal cooler?
A normal air cooler stands in the room and blows air directly off its own fan. A ducted system puts the cooling unit somewhere else — the roof, a plinth, the service yard — and carries the cooled air into the space through insulated ducting and ceiling or wall diffusers. You get the same evaporative cooling and the same fresh-air changes, but the machine, the water and the noise stay out of the room, and the air is delivered evenly rather than blasted from one corner.
Why does ducting need a blower and not an axial cooler?
Pushing air through ducting takes static pressure — the force to move air against the resistance of the duct walls, bends and diffusers. An axial fan moves a large volume of air but at very low pressure, so it cannot push through a duct run; it is built to throw air across an open floor. A blower is built for pressure, which is why our ducted projects use the Blow-X blower range rather than the axial Air-X.
Will a ducted system be quiet inside the room?
That is the main reason people choose it. The blower — the part that makes noise — sits outside the room entirely. Indoors you hear only air moving gently at the diffusers, and the duct is sized to keep that air velocity low. It is why banquet halls, offices and clean areas go ducted: the cooling is there but the machinery is not.
Does ducted cooling cost more than free-standing units?
Usually yes, because there is ductwork to fabricate and fit on top of the units themselves — the price depends on the duct run, the number of diffusers and the layout, so it goes on the written quotation after the survey. What it buys you is delivery to the right places, a quiet room and plant that stays out of the way. Where an open floor can be cooled by wall or roof-mounted units, we will tell you plainly that ducting is not needed rather than sell it.
Can you retrofit ducting into an existing building?
Often, yes — it depends on the roof height, the structure and where the blower can sit outside. We work this out at the free site survey: the duct route, the diffuser positions, the exhaust path and where the unit mounts. Some buildings suit it easily; in others free-standing units are the more sensible answer, and we will say so.
How do you make sure the far end of a long hall gets cooled?
By designing the duct and diffuser layout to the building rather than to the unit. The diffusers are placed so cooled air reaches every zone, the duct is sized so pressure does not drop off before the far end, and the exhaust openings are positioned to pull air right through the space. This is what the survey and heat-load study are for — it is the design that makes a ducted system work, not just the machine.
